So, cliff notes: Buy a winch before going 4-wheeling

It’ s funny, I was shopping for winches for a long time. I talked to my uncle who’s had one on his Land Cruiser for YEARS and I asked him how often he uses it. “besides demo’s and playing around? Never.”

I guess it depends on what kind of wheeling you’ll do I suppose.

Yeah, in the dessert there are probably few and far between instances of needing a winch. North East back woods? Almost a certainty. Especially if you’re the only Land Cruiser in a group of Land Rovers who’d love nothing more than to get photos of Land Rovers pulling a LC out of the mud. Man, he was stubborn.

I knew a few 4x4s who say the same. Winches seem l ike one of those things that you’ll only ever need when you don’t have and visa versa.

Yep, always have at least two winches in the group when going out. More importantly though, know how to use them. They’re no good to you if you can’t use them correctly and you end up killing your self at worse or wrecking your truck at best.

Great article though, glad you can parlay this to a lesson for others.

I had mine on the 86 for 12 years and used it once to pull a broken Bronco out of it’s parking spot so I could jump it..  It made a good spot to mount lights though;

Definitely recommend synthetic cable. It’s cheap enough these days that it’s a no brainer.

thoroughly enjoyed the article - we did a very similar thing while I was still in high school. Ended up requiring the assistance of 100 ft of chain and a bobcat at the top of the gully to yank out the jeep. There was also the salvation of a cabin after we walked out of the woods a few miles. A very valuable lesson in preparation for sure!

Eh, decision making like that and a winch while wheeling in the desert would still get you stuck or dead.

You guys slept in you Jeeps which were partially submerged in a rising stream? Wow.

Sure did. The water was just below the rear seat, so besides me being soaked, we were at least out of the rain.

Coning from the desert, sleeping in a waterway during rain could  be a fatal decision.

Definitely could be . This was a little creek where it was already up to the water line you could see on the shore, so it didn’t seem like it was going to get much higher, but yeah, definitely not a smart decision either way.
